starts us off. >> reporter: it's been four days since hurricane sandy struck the northeast. yesterday there were screams for help in some of the worst hit areas. >> we all need help. i need help desperately. >> reporter: today, some help showed up. homeland security secretary janet napolitano toured devastated staten island. >> we have 3200 fema personnel working this storm in the northeast, and more are on their way. >> reporter: tons of relief supplies were brought into floyd bennett field in brooklyn. national guardsmen and the red cross seemed a lot more visible and fema set up relief centers throughout the storm zone. >> fema was very helpful. they came out. we were in need of clothes. in need of food. and any donation that the people have given us, we're very grateful. >> reporter: because supplies and emergency services have been at such a premium, new yorkers have wondered all week why on earth the stay's legendary marathon was still on schedule to take place sunday. early this evening, it was canceled. and on staten island, where the race always begins, residents said thank g

in the sky. we used to call that the sun. it's been nearly a week since we had anything close to a sunny day around here. i think tomorrow we finally start to turn the corner but it is going to stay chilly. so the weekend word is chilly. but at least it's going to be dry and we won't have to deal with any more crazy weather at least for a little while. a little chance to exhale. back to you. >> we want that, chuck. thanks. >> it's been a long week for people throughout the northeast after hurricane sandy. today president obama is expected to meet with top aides and lawmakers to monitor the government's response to the storm. afterwards homeland security and fema directors will visit storm damaged communities. meantime the storm is now blamed for 109 deaths in the u.s. as people continue to clean up mayor bloomberg canceled tomorrow's new york city marathon. people were outraged this week when bloomberg said the race would boost the economy and inspire the city to move on after the storm. now, though, the race that brings 40,000 runners to the street is off. much of the marathon would have go

to use farm equipment to get around. there is the threat of yet another storm that could be snow in our area. doug cameron now is here to let us know when that might move in, doug. >> of course, that's the last thing anyone along the east coast wants to hear. a possible east coast snowstorm and a possible storm from washington all the way up towards new york and boston. but i do think we're setting up for that pattern. we'll see a trough, a deep trough, along the east coast. that means that storm coming up from the gulf of mexico. it could mean rain for us and possibly snow. i'll break that down for you, but right now, it's all about current temperatures. 35 in winchester, 35 in gaithersburg. i'll let you know about the weekend plus what i think about our next storm coming up. >> okay, doug, thank you. now, to the final stretch for the race for the white house. both president obama and mitt romney battled the ohio tonight. mitt romney spoke to a large crowd in west chester. the president spoke in lie ma, ohio. he'll have one more stop in the buckeye stay before he heads to wisconsin, io

blamed for 109 deaths in the u.s. crews and first responders from our area have been sent to some of the worst hit areas while 2.5 million people are still without power. more than half are in new jersey. >>> as the death toll rises and people continue to clean up new york mayor michael bloomberg has decided to cancel tomorrow's new york city marathon. people were outraged this week when bloomberg said the race would be a boost for the economy and inspire the city to move on after the storm. now though the race that brings 40,000 runners through some of the most damaged parts of the city is off. the race would have closed roads and bridges at a time when transportation is already difficult. countless drivers meanwhile have had to sit in long lines just to fill up their gas tanks. new jersey's governor chris christie has ordered gas rationing based on your license plate number. meantime, the obama administration has ordered the purchase of as much as 22 million gallons of fuel and diesel for the areas hardest hit by sandy. many stations are closed because of damage or lack of power
